Madrid Truck Toll Calculator: AP-6, AP-41 and the Free Radials
Madrid truck tolls: run the radial network free and pay 14-30 € only when you cross Guadarrama
Madrid looks toll-friendly until the barrier appears. The six radial motorways and the M-40/M-50 ring are largely free for trucks, while the AP-6 through the Guadarrama tunnel, the AP-41 to Toledo and the central access zone carry real money. This guide gives 2026 figures per axle class and the corridors where paying beats saving.
Is Madrid really toll-free for trucks?
Mostly yes on the radial network, no on three specific crossings. The A-1 to Burgos, A-2 to Zaragoza and Barcelona, A-3 to Valencia, A-4 to Seville and A-5 to Lisbon are free motorways: no barrier, no per-kilometre charge. The paid exceptions are private concessions on the north-west and south-west edges.
Three rules of thumb worth keeping:
- The M-40 and M-50 rings are free, which is why transit traffic rarely needs a concession at all.
- Toll-free is not cost-free: the free radials carry the worst peak congestion in Spain.
- Every tariff below is indicative for 2026, set by each concessionaire and updated in their systems.
Which corridors out of Madrid charge trucks in 2026?
Indicative one-way tariffs per class; treat as orders of magnitude and confirm before quoting.
| Corridor | Road | Approx. km | 2 axles | 3 axles | 4+ axles |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Madrid – Valencia | A-3, free | ~350 | 0 € | 0 € | 0 € |
| Madrid – Seville | A-4, free | ~530 | 0 € | 0 € | 0 € |
| Madrid – Barcelona | A-2/AP-2, free | ~620 | 0 € | 0 € | 0 € |
| Madrid – Burgos | A-1, free | ~240 | 0 € | 0 € | 0 € |
| Madrid – A Coruña via Guadarrama | AP-6 | ~90 | ~14 € | ~22 € | ~30 € |
| Madrid – Toledo | AP-41 | ~60 | ~5 € | ~8 € | ~11 € |
| Madrid – Ávila | AP-51 | ~100 | ~9 € | ~14 € | ~19 € |
The AP-6 is the single largest toll item in the region, and on north-west lanes it is the one decision that changes the cost of a tour.
Is the AP-6 Guadarrama tunnel worth it for a truck?
Usually yes, and the arithmetic is quick. A 4-axle combination pays about 30 € per direction and skips the N-VI mountain pass: roughly 30 to 45 minutes saved, plus gradients and hairpins that cost fuel and brakes.
- 30 € toll against 45 minutes of driver time at 18–22 €/h is 13–16 € of time, plus 4–6 litres of extra diesel on the climb.
- A missed window in Coslada or San Fernando de Henares costs a night's parking (25–40 €) and a rescheduled slot.
- Winter closures on the pass are not hypothetical; the tunnel keeps the lane open.
The tunnel wins unless the load is price-driven and the driver has slack in the day. On a Saturday with an empty schedule, the N-VI is legitimate; on a Tuesday with a 09:00 gate slot, it is not.
What does the AP-41 to Toledo add?
About 5 to 11 € depending on axles, for a 60 km run that saves 20 to 25 minutes against the free A-42 through Illescas and Parla. On a single Toledo delivery it is marginal. On a multi-drop route where the second stop sits in Seseña or Illescas, the A-42 is normally better because it serves the industrial estates directly instead of dumping you on the Toledo ring.
Do distance-based HGV charges apply in Spain in 2026?
Not as a live scheme. Spain has announced and then postponed a kilometre-based charge for heavy vehicles several times, and no nationwide HGV distance toll is collected in 2026.
What does exist is the electronic payment layer. Barrier-free lanes and Via-T/EETS tags used across Spain, Portugal and France allow charging without a stop. A 4-axle combination without a tag gets billed by plate with an administrative surcharge — 3 to 8 € per event is a realistic order of magnitude, and it lands weeks later.
Can trucks enter central Madrid?
The Madrid 360 low-emission zone restricts access to the central district for vehicles above 3.5 tonnes without the right environmental label and registration. In practice:
- Centre deliveries need a compliant vehicle, a label and usually a window outside the morning peak.
- The estates that matter for freight — Mercamadrid, Coslada, Getafe, San Fernando — sit outside the zone and have their own gate hours.
A plan that pairs a 07:00 centre delivery with a 09:00 Coslada pickup will lose the second slot to the M-40 queue every time.
How do you calculate the toll for a Madrid tour?
- Set the real profile: axles, gross weight, height and Euro emission class decide the class and any environmental surcharge.
- Fix the exact endpoints: Mercamadrid, a Coslada gate or a centre address changes both the toll decision and the access rules.
- Test AP-6 against N-VI, and AP-41 against A-42, valuing the time saved at your own hourly rate.
- Add fuel and waiting time, because the toll is typically 30 to 40% of the direct cost of a Madrid regional run.
Worked example. A 3-axle rigid delivers to Coslada from Valladolid: 210 km, free A-6 to the M-50 plus 12 km of ring. Tolls: 0 €. In the 07:30 peak the ring adds 25 minutes; the same run at 05:30 is faster and cheaper than any tolled alternative. On this corridor, timing beats tariff. Reverse the logic for a Guadalajara run at 16:00, where the AP-6 variant can save the whole unloading window.
FAQ
Is the Madrid–Barcelona motorway tolled for trucks? No. The A-2 and AP-2 are free after concession expiry, so a 4-axle combination pays 0 € at the barrier across the full 620 km.
What does the AP-6 Guadarrama tunnel cost a truck? About 22 € for 3 axles and 30 € for 4+ axles per direction at indicative 2026 rates, with 2-axle vehicles around 14 €.
Is there a city toll for trucks in Madrid? No city toll, but Madrid 360 restricts access to the central district for vehicles above 3.5 tonnes through labelling and time windows.
Does a Madrid toll calculator include the access-zone rules? It should at least flag them. TRANSCEND combines toll per axle class, live traffic and delivery windows into a single cost per load — see how it works.
What decides a Madrid tour: the tariff or the gate?
Rarely the cent at the barrier. What decides is holding the loading slot in Coslada or San Fernando, and the AP-6 versus N-VI choice on north-west lanes. Cost the route, the toll and the window as one object and the answer often flips: the tolled motorway becomes the cheap option once a missed slot is priced at a night's parking plus a rebooking.
